Education in Haiti

Teaching Transformation

In Haiti, 50% of the schools operate in rented buildings, churches or temporary structures. Jean Ludje Charles is the director of one of them: the Leon National School, near Jeremiah city. Until 2018 the school operated in a shed without windows, electricity or potable water, and all classes were shared. Now Jean celebrates the inauguration of the New Leon National School, built as part of the Education Program in Haiti of the Interamerican Development Bank.

Steps to the Future

In Haiti, the average years of schooling is 4.9. Girls drop out of school faster than boys, around the age of 14. In this context, we follow the 9-year-old Casnev Medina, a dedicated student in the National School of Torbeck, in the south of the country. She particularly likes French and math, but she is a special case.

The Building of a Nation

In 2010, an earthquake destroyed more than 288,000 buildings in Haiti, leaving a sad trail of death and displaced. In Carrefour, in the west of the country, 28-year-old Roseguelyne Point-do-Jour works to rebuild her nation, and stands out as one of the few women who specializes in building construction in a local professional training center.
